07/02/2017 - THE LORD IS WITH ME LIKE A MIGHTY CHAMPION!
“THE LORD IS WITH ME LIKE A MIGHTY CHAMPION!”
How we live and act in our Father’s house; what we hear our Father say and see our Lord do; especially what we touch; what we say and do and experience has a profound power to transform our entire lives especially if we understand and fully adhere to what takes place during our worship.
At times, I think that of course we all get it; that we all understand! But, then, I realize that maybe we all don’t get it and so this past Sunday I dedicated the homily to an exposition of a foundational truth of our life and existence. The hope being: that as we grasp more clearly this truth it will facilitate our experience of God’s power in our lives as we worship.
LOVE EXPLAINS ALL
To understand life, to live life well, to live life to the fullest, it only makes sense through the lens of love. Love explains why you are alive, why your heart is beating! You were created out of love and for love by a Good and Loving Father. Over the past months, we have spent time basking in this love of our Father: He loves to hear your voice! He loves when you speak to Him! He loves when you share your life with Him! The Love of the Father answers one of those primary questions in our hearts: where do I come from?
Love also explains your freedom. Precisely because our Father delights and desires you to freely respond to His love by loving Him, He created you free. Without love, life makes no sense. Without freedom, there can be no love. He created you free: free to say “yes!” and free to say “no!”
THERE IS A BATTLE BEING WAGED OVER YOUR LIFE AND OVER THE SALVATION OF YOUR SOUL
Freedom explains why there is a battle being waged. Someone did say no. Someone did shake their fists in rebellion against the living God. The evil one rebelled, said no, and walked away from our Father’s loving embrace. Ever since that moment, the evil one has declared and waged war against the Lord and against His sons and daughters. Satan is seeking to drag you down to the fires of Gehenna. His technique and strategy are the same that he used against Adam and Eve: he systematically strives to destroy your trust in our Father’s loving goodness. He surrounds our lives with his noise, confusion, and images: saying don’t trust God! You can’t trust God! He doesn’t care about you! How could God be Good if . . . and then the evil one fills in those blanks a thousand different ways. But, our faith is like a majestic set of wings that allows us to fly above the assaults of the evil one. Our Faith shows us clearly that sin, death, destruction, illness are not the will or workings of the living God: they are the fruits and consequences of the evil one’s rebellion and our share in that rebellion.
OUR FATHER IS NOT INDIFFERENT TO OUR PLIGHT!
Our Father does not sit on the sidelines. He is not distant. Jesus, His Son, in last Sunday’s Gospel, revealed to us that our Father is passionately in love with all of creation and all of his creatures “not a single sparrow falls to the ground without our Father’s knowledge”. Our Father is especially passionately in love with you. Our Father sent us His Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit not only to fight this battle for us but to completely destroy the power and influence of the evil one over our lives. St. Paul takes us by the hand and leads us to the Cross of Jesus. As we gaze with faith upon the Son of God hanging on the Cross in our place, Paul encourages: Look! See how much our Father loves you! If the Father did not spare His own Son, what other good thing is there that He will not give you in Christ Jesus! The eyes of faith that gaze upon the Son of God on the Cross allow the light of God to transform our lives. Our doubts, our lack of trust in God’s Goodness and in His commandments wither and fade in the light that shines from Jesus!
Have a safe and happy holiday, and let’s remember to keep each other in prayer this week.
